Eight Grocery Outlet stores in Maryland are set to close as the bargain chain shutters dozens of locations nationwide.
The California-based grocer is cutting 36 stores as part of an effort to increase profits, the company said last week during its latest earnings report. Grocery Outlet said it expected the stores to close this year, but didn’t provide a specific timeline.
Here are the Grocery Outlet stores closing in Maryland:
- 1753 Chesaco Ave., Baltimore
- 6510 Baltimore National Pike, Suite A, Catonsville
- 598 Cranbrook Road, Cockeysville
- 5410 Lynx Lane, Columbia
- 1713 Massey Blvd., Hagerstown
- 7660 Belair Road, Nottingham
- 11120 Reisterstown Road, Owings Mills
- 200 Clifton Blvd., Westminster
The stores are being advertised as available for sublease by investment firm Gordon Brothers. Grocery Outlet didn’t immediately respond to a request for additional comment.
Jason Potter, the grocery chain’s president and CEO, said in a news release that the company is closing underperforming stores and reallocating resources to provide a “better in-store experience.” He added that the store closures were needed in part because sales dipped after federally funded benefits were delayed last year.
Many Grocery Outlet shoppers use benefits from federally funded assistance programs, including the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, according to the news release. During last year’s federal government shutdown, states did not receive federal funding for November SNAP benefits, causing delays in disbursement.
More than 680,000 Marylanders — 40% of them children — rely on federally funded SNAP benefits to keep food on the table, with an average monthly benefit of $180.
Grocery Outlet is just the latest chain to close stores in Maryland. In January, Amazon said it was closing all of its Amazon Fresh and Amazon Go stores in the state. Shoppers, a grocery store that serves Maryland, Washington and Virginia markets, closed several locations in the state in 2025.
