A celebration of stories, books, and writers that connect and inspire Maryland residents.

A Continental Affliction is an adventure travel memoir spanning South America, Oceania, Africa, Europe, and North America—told with wit, wonder, and the shock of navigating the world on $10 a day with only paper maps, a backpack, and later, a bicycle.
“A celebration of wanderlust, serendipity, and the world as it was before we could Google our way through it.” – Marianne C. Bohr, author Gap Year: A Baby Boomer Adventure Across 21 Countries
Brian G. Shannon brings an unusual résumé to travel writing. With a career spanning the spectrum of finance, software, entrepreneurship, problem-solving and leadership, he has continued to nurture and service a lifelong wanderlust that finally found its way onto the page. Canadian by birth and American by residence, Brian writes from the perspective of someone who has spent decades navigating personalities, budgets and border crossings. These days, Brian balances writing, running, hiking, traveling, parenting, and working. He lives in Maryland with his true north, Stephanie, and the two are already planning their next adventure.
