Prince George’s County Public Schools are closed Friday following overnight storms that left dozens of school buildings and offices without power.

A message posted to the PGCPS website said downed trees and power lines were impacting recovery efforts.

Overnight storms ripped through parts of Maryland with 50-65 mph wind gusts and up to 1.5 inches of rain in some areas, according to the National Weather Service. A severe thunderstorm watch was issued across much of Maryland late Thursday until about 2 a.m. Friday morning.

As of Friday morning, Pepco reported more than 40,000 customers were without power, while Baltimore Gas and Electric reported another roughly 6,000 without power.

A message on the Pepco website said crews were assessing damage from the severe thunderstorms and working to restore power to all customers.
