Man dies after falling overboard on sailboat in Baltimore County

A 59-year-old Baltimore man died after going overboard on a sailboat in Baltimore County on Wednesday night, officials said.

Richard Leroy Saffery was struck by the boom of the sailboat he was aboard, which caused him to fall overboard, Maryland Natural Resources Police spokesperson Vincent Dortenzo said in a statement.

NRP officers and Baltimore County Fire Department personnel responded to a water rescue near the mouth of Middle River around 7:30 p.m., Vincent Dortenzo said.

Rescuers performed CPR on the man aboard a responding fire vessel before he was transported to a hospital, Dortenzo said.

Saffery was taken to MedStar Franklin Square Medical Center, where he died, officials said.

There were seven other people on the sailboat, Dortenzo said. One person jumped in the water in an attempt to rescue the man, he said.

Last month, officials found the body of a 57-year-old Essex man in Seneca Creek days after he fell from a boat.
