AG’s office identifies military specialist, officer involved in police shooting in Middle River

Authorities have identified the military specialist who died this week after being wounded during a shooting involving a Baltimore County Police officer.

Sadie Holman, 21, of Odenton, was wounded on the morning of Sept. 3 during an encounter with Officer James Haddix, according to the Maryland Office of the Attorney General’s Independent Investigations Division. The IID has not said whether Haddix shot Holman.

Defense officials confirmed that Holman was a specialist in the 704th Military Intelligence Brigade at Fort Meade in Maryland when she died.

“The health and safety of our Soldiers is our number one priority, and the unit is providing support to everyone affected,” Myron Young, a spokesperson for the U.S. Army Intelligence and Security Command, said in a statement.

Officers responded to the 1000 block of Carroll Island Road in Middle River to check on Holman, who was wanted in connection with an assault. Police found the woman in a car with a knife.

Holman turned over the knife but then brandished a firearm, authorities said. Upon seeing the gun, Haddix, an eight-year veteran of the force, fired his weapon, police said.

Holman was transported to a hospital. The attorney general’s office said Tuesday that she had died.

Last month, Attorney General Anthony Brown’s office said it would not prosecute Baltimore County Police Officer Derek Hadel, who punched 56-year-old Samuel “Big Sam” Elsworth Brown Jr. during a wellness check at a Woodlawn intersection in February, leading to the man’s death.
