ORCHARD PARK, NY — The Ravens are down to their third quarterback as they take on Buffalo Bills and MVP quarterback Josh Allen in Buffalo.
After four weeks and three missed games spent recovering from a high ankle sprain, the Ravens’ two-time MVP quarterback Lamar Jackson finally returned to the field Sunday only to be hurt on his first snap.
One quarter later, the Ravens lost backup quarterback Tyler Huntley to a toe injury. Third-string quarterback Joe Fagnano, an undrafted rookie, took over in his first NFL action.
Jackson’s injury occurred while attempting his first pass of the game. His right hand slammed into Buffalo linebacker Greg Rousseau’s arm. He immediately looked down at his hand, showed his thumb to trainers and exited the field with his hand covered by a towel.
Jackson was originally questionable, but the Ravens ruled him out before the end of the first quarter.
Prior to the Week 8 game, Jackson had been working through an ankle injury suffered in the first half of the Week 4 game against the Tennessee Titans. While the team was cagey about his injury, Jackson announced to reporters it was a high ankle sprain and that it was “very painful.”
He returned to practice ahead of the Week 7 game against the Cincinnati Bengals but did not play. The Ravens lost and fell to last in the AFC North.
When they returned to practice, Jackson was a full participant as they prepared for one of their toughest AFC matchups. The Ravens have lost to quarterback Josh Allen and the Bills in big games in the last two seasons.
It was shaping up to be another fascinating matchup between two MVP quarterbacks who often draw comparisons.
Allen led his team on an opening scoring drive that ended when he scored a one-yard rushing touchdown.
Huntley, who has gone 1-2 in his starts for the Ravens this season took over but only played 15 snaps before Fagnano took over in the second quarter.
Fagnano is the Ravens’ emergency QB, meaning by rule he can only stay in the game as long as Huntley is injured. If Huntley is cleared to play, Fagnano must be removed.
