Security footage from the night a woman shot a Columbia Shell gas station worker helped officers find the suspect — already jailed for different reasons in a different state.
Shantay Lashay O’Donnell, 46, of Virginia Beach, Virginia, is accused of shooting 65-year-old Rab Nawaz while he was working, according to Howard County Police.
Howard County Police identified O’Donnell as the woman in a video they shared. She appears in a black midi dress, with a striped crossbody handbag, and she is brandishing a gun. She’s seen mouthing words to the employee, including “open it,” before shooting and leaving the store.
Howard County Police had been searching for O’Donnell since the shooting the night of April 17 in the 7200 block of Cradlerock Way. The Shell station is at the Owen Brown Village Center across from McDonald’s.
A crack in the case came from a phone call from detectives in Broome County, New York.
It is unclear how officers there became aware of O’Donnell. However, Howard County Police said Broome County officials learned of their warrant after arresting her.
They also learned O’Donnell was wanted on robbery charges in her home state, Howard County Police said. She is being held at the Broome County Correctional Facility.
Representatives of the Broome County Sheriff’s Office did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
Howard County officials said O’Donnell will face charges of first- and second-degree attempted murder, first-degree assault, handgun violations and attempted armed robbery in Maryland.
