The Ravens will reportedly be without No. 2 quarterback Tyler “Snoop” Huntley for the rest of the season.
Huntley, who started in three games this season, hurt his toe against the Buffalo Bills in Week 8, and according to ESPN, the turf toe injury will end his season.
A good friend of two-time MVP quarterback Lamar Jackson, Huntley has played for the Ravens in six of his seven years in the NFL.
Last year, he started out with the Cleveland Browns in training camp before being signed to the Ravens’ practice squad. When Jackson was injured in Week 4, it took a game and a half for Huntley to win the backup job over offseason free agent signing Cooper Rush.
After Huntley appeared in five games and guided the Ravens to victories in his two starts, the Ravens signed him to an extension in March that would keep him in Baltimore through the end of Jackson’s current contract, which expires after the 2027 season.
This season, Huntley saw his first action in Week 4 when Jackson suffered a high-ankle sprain near the end of the first half against the Tennessee Titans. Huntley came in and held onto the lead for a win but didn’t lead any scoring drives.
The next week, Huntley led the Ravens in a comeback overtime win against the Atlanta Falcons. In the next two games, both losses, he and the offense put together strong first quarters before fizzling out.
The Bills game marked Jackson’s return from his ankle injury. But he played one snap before injuring his thumb when he hit his hand on the arm of outside linebacker Gregory Rousseau on the follow-through of his first throw. Head coach Jesse Minter announced Jackson needed surgery and would go on injured reserve for a “potentially” season-ending injury.
Huntley came in and played 15 snaps before injuring his toe. Minter said Monday that Huntley would “probably not” be able to play this week, but they’d “see how it goes” to determine whether he would be out long term.
Rookie Joe Fagnano will now start at quarterback as the Ravens take on the Jacksonville Jaguars on “Thursday Night Football.” He is also dealing with an ankle injury.
The Ravens signed two more quarterbacks this week, Austin Reed and Kedon Slovis. If all else fails, running back Justice Hill is the emergency quarterback.
