The Washington Commanders are going back to the future.
The team unveiled a new set of uniforms Wednesday, with a color scheme that closely resembles the looks the franchise wore during its glory days, when it won three Super Bowl titles (XVII, XXII and XXVI) in the 1980s and early ’90s and was known as the Redskins.
The white throwback jersey the Commanders introduced last year will be the team’s primary away look in 2026. The Commanders’ home jerseys were overhauled, with a burgundy base and white numbers with gold stitching.
Both jerseys will be paired with a new gloss burgundy helmet that has the team’s old three-stripe pattern down the center and a gold facemask. And they can be paired with an alternate set of gold pants that include retro striping.
A third, all-black alternate uniform, known as the “Hail Raiser,” features a burgundy-and-gold “W” on the helmet and a spear piercing the letter. The franchise featured a spear with a feather dangling from it on its helmet from 1965-68.
“The inclusion of the spear and its sharpest point — the spearhead or ‘tip of the spear’ — symbolizes the top fighters, the front lines, those leading a mission who are unafraid to step into the fire,” the team said in its announcement.
All the uniform combinations will bring back a block style font for the numbering and lettering, which includes the reintroduction of the player’s number on the shoulder of each iteration of the jersey.
