State health officials have confirmed another measles case in Maryland, bringing the total so far this year to 13.

The Maryland Department of Health said the most recently confirmed positive case involved a state resident who may have been exposed on the Upper Eastern Shore. Anyone who visited the ChristianaCare Union Hospital emergency department in Elkton on Aug. 2 between 7 p.m. and 10:15 p.m. may have been exposed.

Those not fully vaccinated or otherwise immune who were at the location should monitor themselves for early symptoms — cough, fever, runny nose, red rash or red, watery eyes — for 21 days.

Measles is a highly contagious disease that can be spread easily through the air when an infected person breathes, coughs and sneezes, though it can also be spread by touching infected surfaces, officials said a news release.

The state has confirmed more measles cases so far in 2026 than the nine previous years combined. There were three measles cases in 2025, one each in 2024 and 2023, and zero from 2020 to 2022.

On Friday, state health officials warned of possible measles exposure after someone visiting the state tested positive in Cecil County earlier in the week.
