It started like any other Tuesday and ended with many across the U.S. mourning what, 25 years later, remains the deadliest terrorist attacks on American soil.
On Sept. 11, 2001, four planes were hijacked, two of which struck the World Trade Center’s North and South towers in New York, another hit the Pentagon in Washington and the last crashed in a field in Shanksville, Pennsylvania. Nearly 3,000 people — those aboard the flights and inside the buildings hit — died. The events of that day, remembered as 9/11, have shaped many parts of American culture since, notably air travel.
On the 25th anniversary of the attacks, many in Maryland are looking to remember those who died as well as first responders and military service members. Here are some of the ways Marylanders are memorializing 9/11.
Saturday, Sept. 5
The Stair Climb
Baltimoreans will climb 110 flights of stairs at M&T Bank Stadium, akin to the 110 stories at the World Trade Center, while carrying the photograph of a firefighter who died responding to the attacks.
First responders sprinted into action following the attacks, including 343 New York City Fire Department firefighters who climbed up to the 73rd floor of the North Tower to rescue people before it collapsed.
For the 25th anniversary, the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation is asking people to honor these first responders by finishing their climb. Additionally, organizers at the climb in Baltimore will host a reception for participants.

Wednesday, Sept. 9
9.11 Promise Run
The 9.11 Promise Run is a three-day event that spans more than 200 miles from the 9/11 memorial at the Pentagon in Arlington to the 9/11 memorial in New York. People run in teams to raise funds for scholarships for the children of first responders and military service members killed or seriously injured in the line of duty, according to organizers.
There’s also a $35 virtual option that lets those interested commit to running or biking either in their hometown or at a gym for 9.11 miles. In addition to registration fees, all participants commit to raising $100 by Oct. 1.

Thursday, Sept. 10
Laurel Remembers
The Laurel Historical Society is hosting an event for Marylanders to reflect and share their personal stories around 9/11.
The bulk of the event will feature a panel presentation from two Laurel residents: Wayne Dzwonchyk, a Department of Defense historian, and Lorraine Brooks, the writer and director of “Out of the Blue: Reflections from Ground Zero,” a theatrical presentation of first responders’ words during the terrorist attacks.

Friday, Sept. 11
Memorializing Marylanders
The Hope and Peace Foundation is hosting several events to honor the many deaths during the 9/11 attacks, including a candlelight vigil honoring Marylanders.
This event started on the 10th anniversary of the attacks. The vigil includes a reading of the names of Marylanders who were killed during 9/11 and those who died during the war that followed.

Location: 2543 Putty Hill Ave., Parkville
The 4 from Howard County
Local officials will lead a wreath-laying ceremony in remembrance of the four Howard County residents who lost their lives in the 9/11 attacks. Officials, police and firefighters will gather starting 8:46 a.m., the time the first plane hit the North Tower.

The 11 from Montgomery County
A ceremony will be held at the 9/11 memorial at Courthouse Square Park to remember the 11 Montgomery County residents who died in 9/11 attacks.
The memorial features 11 benches, one for each of the victims, as well as a plaque that bears their names and will be illuminated by the sun on the morning of Sept. 11. The ceremony will include a presentation of colors and remarks by city and county officials.

Sunday, Sept. 13
Heroes Run
The Annapolis 9/11 Heroes Run honors those who sprinted into action the day of the attacks and risked their lives in the war that followed.
Participants of all ages and fitness levels are invited to run the 5K or walk a mile in honor of first responders and service members.
Time: 11 a.m.
