Baltimore Gas and Electric Co. is investigating reports of a foul odor in Crofton and Gambrills after fire officials fielded dozens of calls from concerned residents, officials said.

Stephanie Weaver, a BGE spokesperson, said teams are trying to determine the source of a smell that alarmed residents on Wednesday afternoon. They don’t believe there is any danger to residents, she said.

“It’s all hands on deck. They’re surveying that entire area to see what’s going on,” she said.

Weaver said a contractor left a valve open earlier Wednesday, but it’s since been closed. What many people might’ve smelled earlier was mercaptan, a chemical with a smell that’s been likened to rotten cabbage, that BGE adds to lines so people can more easily detect gas leaks, Weaver said.

Michael Mayo, a spokesperson for the Anne Arundel County Fire Department, said crews responded to more than 60 calls for service about gas odors over the past three hours. Most of those calls have come from Crofton in the western part of the county, though fire officials said they’ve not located any leaks after reviewing the inside and outside of homes.
