Beach traffic wasn’t the only thing slowing motorists on the Eastern Shore on Saturday — a runaway emu decided to make its own detour along the Salisbury Bypass.
Maryland State Police said troopers from the Salisbury Barrack were called to the Salisbury Bypass near the Ocean City exit at about 10:50 a.m. Saturday after reports of an emu wandering in the road.
The large flightless bird remained on the loose for hours as troopers tracked it down and kept it away from traffic.
At about 1:30 p.m., the emu was struck by a vehicle. Police said the bird was not injured.
The chase ended around 2 p.m., when troopers caught the emu near Pheasant Drive using a dog leash. The bird was reunited with its owners at about 3 p.m.
No injuries were reported, and the feathered fugitive’s unexpected adventure ended safely.
