A judge on Wednesday sentenced a Silver Spring woman to a year in prison for crashing her sports car at twice the speed limit into an SUV in a 2025 collision that killed an 85-year-old woman.
Montgomery County District Court Judge Eric Johnson also sentenced Jesica Argueta, 24, to five years of supervised probation upon her release, according to a Thursday statement from the Montgomery County State’s Attorney’s Office.
Argueta pleaded guilty July 22 to one count of vehicular manslaughter by gross negligence and one count of second-degree assault.
On Aug. 7, 2025, prosecutors said, Argueta was driving a Toyota GR86 up to 84.5 mph in a 40 mph zone when the car struck a Toyota 4Runner, severely injuring the front seat passenger, Josephine Gieske, and causing serious injuries to the driver.
The collision happened about 7:44 a.m. at Randolph Road and Sherwood Forest Drive in Silver Spring.
Gieske died from her injuries on Aug. 22, prosecutors said.
In addition to speeding, prosecutors said, Argueta was weaving in and out of morning rush-hour traffic prior to the collision.
The victims were driving home from church when their vehicle was struck, prosecutors said.
