Maryland State Police are investigating the death of a 31-year-old prisoner at Eastern Correctional Institution in Westover Tuesday, officials said.
Officers found Quran Middleton-Bey, of Cheltenham, lying on the ground and unresponsive in his cell at the Somerset County facility shortly after midnight, state police said.
Emergency personnel transported him to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for an autopsy to determine the cause and manner of his death, police said.
Officials did not share anything about potential suspects or if they believe the death was a homicide.
Middleton-Bey was among four people arrested for the death of a local rapper, Khalil “Big Lyl” Wiggins, in 2017, according to the Prince George’s County Police Department. Online court documents show Middleton-Bey was serving a 10-year sentence for his involvement in this incident.
Middleton Bey is the fourth person at a Maryland prison whose death is being investigated by state police this year. The death of three prisoners at state facilities in January led police to investigate.
Joseph Harrell, 33, and Javon Foster, 38, both died in separate instances while jailed at Jessup Correctional Institution. Larry Horton, 51, died while serving time at North Branch Correctional Institution in Allegany County.
Last year, 13 people incarcerated at different facilities across Maryland died by homicide, the most in over a decade. Three people, Ray Stephen Oselmo, 36; Donyell Morris, 24; and Shane Lanham, 28; died at the same Somerset County facility where Middleton-Bey was found dead.
Another prisoner at Eastern Correctional Institution was charged in Lanham’s death. The others remain under investigation.
