Emmy-winning television producer and actress and New York Times bestselling author Laverne Cox will be in “the city that reads” next weekend, closing out the first day of the Baltimore Book Festival, organizers announced.

Cox, who rose to fame on Netflix’s “Orange is the New Black,” will be in conversation with Melanie Bryant, the director of the Mayor’s Office of LGBTQ Affairs, at the annual festival’s 32nd Street Stage at 7 p.m. on Saturday.

The pair will discuss Cox’s memoir, “Transcendent,” which was released in June. The book details Cox’s experience with childhood trauma, navigating Hollywood as a transgender woman and healing.

“Laverne, we can’t wait to welcome you to Baltimore,” Mayor Brandon Scott said in an Instagram post announcing her addition to the festival lineup.

Cox is a four-time Emmy-nominated actress and an advocate for transgender rights and representation. Her breakthrough role as Sophia Burset on Netflix’s “Orange is the New Black” led to her becoming the first openly transgender actress to get a Primetime acting Emmy nomination, according to IMDb.

Cox’s role on the hit show has also landed her two Screen Actors Guild awards. She won an Emmy as the executive producer of “Laverne Cox Presents: The T Word,” a documentary about the lives, joys and obstacles of seven young transgender people from different cities, including Baltimore.

The Baltimore Book Festival kicks off Saturday at 10 a.m. in the Waverly neighborhood and is free. It features conversations with authors, readings and three blocks — 30th, 31st and 32nd streets west of Greenmount Avenue — of literary vendors.

The festival started in 1996 with then Mayor Kurt Schmoke’s “The City that Reads” initiative.
