It’s sunny and pleasant outside. Unfortunately, it looks to be just false spring.

Temperatures will near record highs in Central Maryland on Tuesday and Wednesday, then quickly drop by the end of the week, according to the National Weather Service. Adding to the seasonal whiplash, there’s also the possibility of severe thunderstorms, hail and showers this week, according to the NWS.

High pressure over the Atlantic Ocean, plus southerly winds and plenty of sunshine, is contributing to the near-record warmth, said Kevin Witt, a meteorologist for the weather service’s Baltimore/Washington office.

The record highs for Baltimore on March 10 and 11 are 80 in 2016 and 79 in 2021, respectively, he said. The forecasts for Tuesday and Wednesday are just a bit shy of the record.

“We’re forecasting it to be 77 for today and 78 for tomorrow. So we’re going to get close,” he said. “We may still get it.”

The weather is expected to revert to rainy and slightly chilly for the rest of the week. Temperatures will hover in the 50s through the weekend, with the evenings expected to be cloudy with lows in the 40s.

Showers could fall onto the greater Baltimore area after 3 p.m. on Tuesday, with chances rising by the hour. Severe thunderstorms could hit the region overnight, Witt said, with wind gusts over 58 mph and quarter-sized hail or larger.

After this front passes through, temperatures will drop pretty quickly on Thursday by as much as 25 degrees, Witt said.

So treasure the nice weather this afternoon.
