Rugby, festivals and a parade could mean weekend traffic headaches across Baltimore

A rugby match at the M&T Bank Stadium. A Ukrainian festival near Patterson Park. The Star-Spangled Banner Weekend Parade in Locust Point. Closures along the Jones Falls Expressway. There’s a lot happening this weekend, Baltimore, so drive accordingly.

The Baltimore City Department of Transportation is implementing several traffic modifications across the city starting Friday through Sunday evening.

Parking restrictions and detours are in effect on parts of Montford Avenue due to the 50th annual Ukrainian Festival. Here are the roads that closed Thursday afternoon and will be blocked off from traffic through Sunday at 10 p.m.:

• Montford Avenue between Eastern Avenue and Fleet Street
• Montford Avenue at Pfister Court

In Locust Point, some roads will be closed Friday from around 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. for the Star-Spangled Banner Weekend Parade, which will kick off at 7 p.m. The parade will start at 1000 Hull St. and head onto eastbound East Fort Avenue toward Fort McHenry.

Here are the roads that will be impacted:

• Hull Street closed from 1000 Hull to Fort Avenue
• Eastbound Fort Avenue closed from Hull Street to Fort McHenry

Drivers should use alternate routes or travel before and after the parade to avoid delays, transportation officials said.

People in Baltimore should expect heavy traffic and large crowds near the M&T Bank Stadium starting around 5 p.m. on Saturday. Transportation officials said people should plan for extra travel time and opt for public transportation.

Fans attending the rugby match and driving to the stadium should use the commercial garages and avoid parking in surrounding neighborhoods.

The following roads will be impacted on Saturday from noon through 1 a.m. on Sunday:

• The northbound Russell Street Service Drive will be closed between West and Hamburg Streets throughout the match.
• The Hamburg Street Bridge will be temporarily closed between Leadenhall and Paca streets at the beginning of the match. Closures will be removed during the match, then in effect again just before it ends.
• The Ostend Street Bridge will be temporarily closed between Sharp and Warner streets at the beginning of the match. Closures will be removed during the match, then in effect again just before it ends.
• Warner Street between the Ostend Street Bridge and Stockholm Street.
• Warner Street, Alluvion Street, Worcester Street and Bayard Street.
• Hamburg Street will be closed between Hanover and Charles streets.
• Hanover Street between Henrietta and Hamburg streets will be closed for southbound travel near the end of the match.

Some lanes of the Jones Falls Expressway will also be closed this weekend for graffiti removal.

The right lane along the northbound Jones Falls Expressway between Falls Road and Cold Spring Lane was closed Friday morning and will be blocked until around 11 p.m. on Sunday. City transportation officials said times are approximate and encouraged drivers to stay alert and consider alternate routes.
