The Orioles are laying off multiple people from business-side departments, sources told The Baltimore Banner.
The exact number of employees affected wasn’t immediately clear, although sources said the employees included members of the teams responsible for business operations, content production and in-game presentation.
One source with direct knowledge called it a “bloodbath.” Two sources said the number let go was at least in the teens.
According to an internal memo sent to staff members from president of business operations Catie Griggs, no further staffing changes are planned.
“Some of the people leaving have been here for more than a decade, others for a much shorter time, and every one of them was part of our team. To many of you, they are friends as well as coworkers,” Griggs wrote in the memo, which was first obtained by The Baltimore Sun. “For those of you who have been here a long time, today may also feel like losing part of what this place has been. That history matters, and it remains part of who we are. We’re grateful for what each of them gave this organization.”
There is expected to be a lockout in December once the current collective bargaining agreement expires, although it’s unclear whether that played a role in these firings. Sources said these moves were not made with that in mind. The Orioles still have job postings open for multiple positions across the organization.
“These decisions were about making sure our teams are built and staffed for the work ahead, not about reducing headcount,” Griggs wrote in the memo. “We’re continuing to recruit for critical roles and will add talent in areas where we have clear needs.”
A spokesperson for principal owner David Rubenstein declined to comment. An Orioles team spokesperson confirmed that changes were being made within the business operations department but declined to comment further. The spokesperson said the team does not comment on employment matters.
