Heritage Smokehouse will close its storefront at the end of the summer after five years in the Govans neighborhood, according to a Monday social media post by the business.

The barbecue restaurant opened on York Road in 2021 and became known for artisanal sausages, brisket and decadent cakes.

Co-owners George and Jenny Marsh told The Banner in 2024 that the barbecue eatery faced major financial struggles: β€œWe’re three years in and we’ve not made any money,” George Marsh said at the time. Then, wholesale beef prices doubled their retail values, sparking a backlash from some customers surprised by the inflated cost of the smokehouse’s meat platters. Now, prices are even higher.

The restaurateurs did not immediately respond to requests for comment Monday evening.

George Marsh previously worked for Parts & Labor in Remington, and his wife, Jenny, is a pastry chef. They launched the barbecue business together in 2019.

On social media, the owners urged customers to support the eatery in its final months, adding that the smokehouse will search for other locations and partnerships to continue selling its food. The business will not be renewing its lease in August, however, instead opting to vacate its 5800 York Road location and β€œgo out with a bang!” the post said.

β€œThank you all again for the love and support you have shown us and we hope to see you all soon! LETS MAKE THIS A GREAT SUMMER!” the post said.
