It’s been a busy week of major Hollywood announcements for Rei Ami.

The Germantown native and University of Maryland alum, born Sarah Lee, is in the homestretch of an electrifying awards season thanks to her role in Netflix’s “KPop Demon Hunters,” culminating in a live performance at the Academy Awards on Sunday.

Netflix announced Thursday that “KPop Demon Hunters,” the streaming giant’s most-watched original title in its history, is getting a sequel.

“These characters are like family to us, their world has become our second home,” co-director Chris Appelhans said in a statement. “We’re excited to write their next chapter, challenge them and watch them evolve — and continue pushing the boundaries of how music, animation and story can come together.”

Co-directors Maggie Kang and Appelhans will be returning to work on the new project, but filmmakers have not confirmed that all the original voice actors and singers will return. The Banner contacted representatives for Netflix and Ami for comment.

Ami made waves this past year for her work on the animated Netflix film about K-pop girl group members who secretly moonlight as demon hunters. She provided the singing voice for Zoey, a member of the Huntrix girl group.

The film’s song “Golden” catapulted into the pop culture-verse, taking over radio stations, late-night TV and Billboard’s Global 200 list at No. 1. It also nabbed Ami her first Grammy nomination and first Golden Globe win, along with Grammy and Oscar nominations for the songwriters.

A Billboard top honor

Rei got more good news on Wednesday when Billboard announced she and her fellow Huntrix singers, EJAE and Audrey Nuna, would receive its 2026 Women of the Year award at the Billboard Women in Music ceremony April 29.

To put that accolade into context, it has been bestowed upon the likes of Beyoncé, Taylor Swift and Madonna.

Ami is also set to perform “Golden” on Sunday at the Academy Awards, along with EJAE and Nuna. “Golden” is one of two nominees for best original song this year that will showcase live performances on the Oscars stage. (Though, if the song wins, the Oscar will go to its songwriters rather than singers.)
