How did Baltimore hurt you, Eric André?

The irreverent comedian had strong words for Charm City during a recent Esquire roundtable interview with John Cena, Christopher Meloni and Ego Nwodim, André’s co-stars in the new Netflix comedy, “Little Brother.”

After Nwodim, a Baltimore County native, suggested that he take a trip to Baltimore, André made his stance clear.

“I’m never going to Baltimore again,” André said. “May that city burn to the ground for what they do to me.”

The Florida native didn’t expand on or clarify the reasoning behind his disdain. But that didn’t stop Cena from jumping to Baltimore’s defense while flexing his own knowledge of the city’s beer and baseball history.

“Don’t do that. That’s the birthplace of National Bohemian beer. It says ‘From the Land of Pleasant Living’ on the can!” Cena exclaimed. “Don’t do that to Baltimore.”

While National Bohemian famously got its start in Baltimore in the late 1800s, the now Pabst Brewing Company-owned beer is no longer brewed here. Many, though, still associate the lager and its mustachioed mascot with the city.

But Cena, a retired WWE superstar, wasn’t done. He then came off the top rope with Orioles shout-outs.

“Brooks and Frank Robinson! Come on,” Cena said before name-dropping Hall of Famers Cal Ripken Jr. and Jim Palmer.

Cena’s passionate defense opened the door to a pile-on: Meloni added another MLB titan from Baltimore to the mix — Pigtown’s Babe Ruth (“The candy bar?” André replied) before Nwodim mentioned Edgar Allan Poe for good measure.

The verbal pummeling seemed to soften André a bit, as he added his own call-outs of notable Baltimore figures like John Waters and rapper JPEGMAFIA to discredit his anti-Charm City stance.

Cena, though, wasn’t done. He was ready to pull what many might consider the ultimate trump card: “Old Bay Seasoning! It’s on everything. It’s in your water.”

André blamed his negative feelings about Baltimore on experiencing “a trauma there” but did not elaborate.

His publicity team did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Perhaps he’s still hurting from his appearance last month at CFG Bank Arena for WWE Raw, where wrestler Jacob Fatu threw the actor from his seat to the ring and proceeded to land not one, but two top-rope splashes on André.

The 17-time world champion Cena wasn’t moved, giving his co-star a message that likely resonates with many fans of Baltimore.

“All the good things should outweigh the bad things,” he said.
