Several signs on the doors and hanging inside the post office in Fells Point warn customers before entering: There are no stamps.
“Sorry, we are temporarily out of forever (first class stamps). Sorry for the inconvenience,” the printed signs say. A handwritten note below on one sign adds, “All Stamps.”
Mike Rose, who lives in Upper Fells Point, tried to grab a stamp one afternoon so he could pay a medical bill via mail. But he left the store confused and stampless.
He said workers there told him “they haven’t had stamps in three months.” Rose eventually sent his letter by printing a stamp from the internet.
Mark Lawrence, a spokesperson with the U.S. Postal Service, said in an email that the “individual financially responsible for maintaining the stamp stock at the Fells Point Post Office has been on unexpected extended leave.”
“The Postal Service is currently taking steps to add a new stamp supply as soon as possible to resolve this uncommon situation,” he said. “We apologize to our Fells Point customers for any inconvenience incurred.”
Lawrence also said stamps are available for sale online and can be delivered to customers. He added that there is no stamp shortage.
A woman working in the post office on Wednesday, who declined to give her name because she was not allowed to do so, said she has been asking for months to have more stamps sent to the office. Some customers have become angry with her, so she’s suggested they direct their complaints to the USPS website.
