6 children, including 1-year-old, found alone in vacant Baltimore house

Six children under the age of 10 were found alone in a home in East Baltimore that was possibly vacant on Monday, police said.

The children, ages 9, 7, 6, 5, 3 and 1 years old, were found inside a house on the 2900 block of East Monument Street after officers received reports of child neglect around 11:30 a.m., said Lindsey Eldridge, a spokesperson for the Baltimore Police Department. She said in an email that the home “appeared to be vacant.”

Eldridge said some of the kids were found partially clothed, while others were naked. The officer who responded to the scene took the kids to be evaluated at Johns Hopkins Pediatrics before they were turned over to Child Protective Services, Eldridge said, except for the oldest child who was picked up by a family member.

An arrest has been made, Eldridge said, but would not identify the person detained as the investigation continues.

In Maryland, it’s a crime to leave a child younger than 8 years old unattended, or without the supervision of a reliable person who is at least 13.
