A Baltimore County Police officer shot an armed woman Thursday morning in Middle River after she pulled a gun during a welfare check, officials said.

Officers responded to the 1000 block of Carroll Island Road to check on an armed person wanted in connection with an assault. The woman, who was in a vehicle and not identified by police, initially relinquished a knife to officers before producing a firearm, police said. An officer fired their gun in response, striking the woman.

Police said she was taken to a nearby hospital with a potentially life-threatening gunshot wound after the scene was secured. Officers recovered a gun from the vehicle.

The officers involved have not been publicly identified. The officer who fired the gun has since been put on administrative leave. It’s unclear if there were any other people in the vehicle or how many officers were involved.

The Independent Investigations Division of the Office of the Attorney General is investigating the shooting.
