Police on Monday identified the 16-year-old who died in a “targeted shooting” inside a North Baltimore home last week.

Jaythan Day was found unresponsive and unconscious Friday evening in a Medfield neighborhood home with a gunshot wound, according to police. He was pronounced dead at the Sinai Hospital, police said.

Police responded to the house on the 1400 block of West Old Cold Spring Lane around 6:25 p.m. Friday. James D. Moses, a spokesperson for the Baltimore Police Department, said this was “a targeted incident that occurred inside a home” and did not believe there was a danger to the public.

Dennis Day, the teen’s father, told WJZ that Jaythan was a good person with the “sweetest heart in the world.”

Jaythan, his sister and his mother moved to Maryland from Alabama, said Dennis Day. Jaythan lived with his sister in a home with other teenagers and did not live where the shooting happened, according to his family.

Jaythan was a student at Mergenthaler Vocational-Technical High School, Jermaine Skinner, the school’s principal, shared in a letter to students’ families. Commonly known as Mervo, the Northeast Baltimore institution offers culinary arts, engineering, health care and other technical training programs as one of two vocational schools in the city.

Skinner offered condolences to Jaythan’s loved ones and encouraged those who knew him to seek support if needed.

“News like this can be hard for students, staff, and families to process,” Skinner wrote. “To support our community, City Schools counselors and additional support staff will be available at school throughout the week to meet with students and staff who may need someone to talk with.”

Nearly four years ago, Jeremiah Brogden, a 17-year-old student-athlete at Mervo, was fatally shot during dismissal ahead of Labor Day weekend. An 18-year-old man was sentenced to life in prison for Jeremiah’s death.
