Ryan Duvall, an 18-year-old Harford Community College student who was widely respected in the Baltimore County martial arts community, was killed in a crash Friday night in Cockeysville that left three other teenagers injured, police said Sunday.
Baltimore County Police responded around 9:45 p.m. to the intersection of Poplar Hill and Merrymans Mill roads for a reported single-vehicle crash. Investigators said the vehicle was traveling south on Poplar Hill Road when it left the road and struck a tree.
Duvall, who was a passenger, was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency medical personnel, police said.
His family on Sunday night remembered him as “a thoughtful, kind and considerate person who was strong in his Christian faith and loved his family,” his sister, Jamie Duvall, said in an email.
Her brother was also a four-year honor student, a first-degree black belt in Hapkido and “the best uncle” to his 8-year-old niece, his sister said, as well as a “fantastic” brother. He had almost finished his first year of college.
“We are truly heartbroken, and want to thank everyone who has reached out to us,” Duvall said in the email. “The prayers and support from our community has been tremendous and we are forever grateful.”
The owners of Quest Martial Arts in Cockeysville also mourned the loss in a Facebook post, praising Duvall as an advanced student who was widely “loved and admired.”
Police said the driver, who is a minor, and a minor passenger suffered life-threatening injuries and were taken to a hospital. A second minor passenger was hospitalized with injuries that were not immediately described.
Dulaney High School Principal Steve Wynkoop sent an email to parents acknowledging that one of the school’s students was involved in the crash. He said the Baltimore County Schools Traumatic Support Team will be available for students and staff.
“Out of respect for the families involved, we are not able to share additional details at this time,” Wynkoop wrote. “Our thoughts and prayers are with all of those affected.”
Another of the injured teens is a sophomore at Calvert Hall College High School in Towson and was in stable condition late Sunday afternoon. In a Saturday statement, Calvert Hall administrators said they were “aware of the unfortunate accident” and “keeping the individuals involved, along with their families, in our prayers.”
It was not immediately clear how many of the other teenagers attended the school.
The crash remains under investigation, and police have not released additional details.
At the scene, tire marks cut through the dirt and grass just beyond a sharp bend in the road, tracing where the vehicle veered off course.
At the base of a tree with bark stripped away from the impact, fresh flowers had been left as a memorial.
Passing drivers slowed as they approached the site Sunday morning, and at least one person stopped to pay respects. Among the passersby was one with a vehicle with a Calvert Hall bumper sticker on the back windshield.
A GoFundMe organized by Duvall’s sister seeks to help cover funeral expenses and support the family.
