Maryland State Police are investigating a crash in Prince George’s County that killed a highway worker who was setting up traffic cones Saturday on the Capital Beltway.
The worker has been identified as Robert Dempsey, 40, of Ellicott City. He was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency medical services personnel.
The crash happened shortly before noon on the inner loop of Interstate 495 near Maryland Route 414, according to authorities. Troopers from the Maryland State Police College Park Barrack responded to reports of a collision involving two vehicles, along with crews from the Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration to help manage traffic closures.
Investigators say Dempsey was working outside an emergency vehicle, placing traffic cones on the ramp from St. Barnabas Road as part of traffic control operations, when he was hit by a Mazda CX-5 traveling on the ramp.
The driver of the Mazda, Joshua Anderson, 41, of Fort Washington, was taken by ambulance to a hospital for treatment. No other injuries were reported. Officials said charges will depend on the outcome of the investigation.
Several lanes were shut down for nearly five hours while investigators processed the scene and cleared the roadway. Emergency responders from Prince George’s County assisted.
