A Baltimore County man is charged with hate crimes for allegedly making racial remarks to a Taco Bell worker in Silver Spring and threatening to shoot her, Montgomery County Police said Monday.
Ryan Barile, 44, of Halethorpe, is also charged with stalking and telephone misuse.
Barile ordered food at a Taco Bell in the 13800 block of Georgia Avenue at about 12 p.m. on Aug. 20. Court records said he ordered at a kiosk and got angry because his order was missing a taco.
He then told an employee, “You Hispanics are always doing something,” prompting her to tell Barile to change his attitude toward customer service workers, according to court records.
Barile allegedly told the employee, “You Mexicans are the same” and “[your] type of people need to go back to [your] country,” court records said.
He also asked the employee to go outside with him so he could hit her, according to court records.
The next day, Barile returned to the same Taco Bell shortly before noon and ordered food from the same employee. When she handed him his drink, Barile said thank you, but the employee did not respond, court records said.
Barile left the restaurant, called the Taco Bell and made more racially derogatory and threatening comments about the employee. He said she was “going to pay for what she did,” court records said.
Barile, whose number and first and last names appeared on caller ID, then threatened to return to the Taco Bell to shoot and kill the employee. Barile’s race was listed as white in court records.
Detectives obtained an arrest warrant against Barile, and he was taken into custody on Wednesday. He is being held at the Montgomery County Central Processing Unit. A judge held him without bond on Thursday, court records said.
Barile’s attorney could not be immediately reached for comment on Monday afternoon.
