Mom’s Organic Market reopened Friday morning after the city’s health department shut the store down for a day over a rodent infestation.

Shoppers were turned away Thursday morning as workers sanitized the floors, shelves and aisles. A health inspector visited the store on Wednesday and found mouse droppings and chewed food items throughout the store, according to an inspection report.

The inspector didn’t see any rats in the store, department spokesperson Blair Adams said in an email. But he found dead mice on sticky pads under the shelves, according to the report, and some aisles smelled like “mouse urine.” Mouse droppings were also found in the poultry cooler.

Known for its organic food, Mom’s has more than 10 locations across Maryland and two in Washington. The location at the Rotunda is surrounded by other businesses, including a Starbucks, Ovenbird Bakery and Warehouse Cinemas.

Mom’s did not respond to requests for comment.
