It’s common to see people riding dirt bikes around Baltimore, especially in the summer, but they’re illegal on city streets — and have become a contentious topic.

Police Commissioner Richard Worley was asked about dirt bike enforcement at Monday’s Police Accountability Board meeting, expressing frustration “that is a problem that we’ve been dealing with since I was an officer 25 years ago in the Western [District].”

Worley said he sent a captain to Philadelphia to study its police department’s response to dirt biking. He said Baltimore Police couldn’t dedicate dozens of officers to dirt bike enforcement like Philadelphia, but that the agency was looking into enforcement options.

“If we really want to put a dent into it, we’re going to need a stiffer sentence for riding these dirt bikes,” Worley said.

Currently, illegal dirt bike riding in Baltimore is punishable by up to a $1,000 fine and 90 days in jail.
