A police pursuit of a homicide suspect in Baltimore and Harford counties ended when the driver shot himself near Aberdeen Proving Ground on Friday, authorities said.

The suspect, 41-year-old Charles Glenroy Smellie Jr. of Forestville, was the sole occupant of a white BWM 330i, according to a news release from Maryland State Police.

Officers with the Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force told state police that they were pursuing Smellie on Interstate 95 in Baltimore County around 8 a.m. The driver then led the officers onto State Route 152 into Harford County before the pursuit ended near the gate of the U.S. Army facility, according to the news release.

Emergency medical services pronounced the driver dead at the scene. No officers deployed their weapons.

The Prince George’s County Police Department is leading the investigation into the homicide, and state police are reviewing Smellie’s death.
