Ten residents of Cecil County and Delaware were injured Saturday afternoon when a boat exploded moments after refueling at a Chesapeake City marina, where investigators believe a buildup of fuel vapors may have caused the blast.

The explosion happened around 4 p.m. at Schaefers Canal House, a restaurant on the Chesapeake & Delaware Canal, according to the Maryland Natural Resources Police. The boat was a 1988 Wellcraft 32-foot cruiser, police said.

The explosion happened immediately after the vessel fueled up at Schaefers Canal House and Marina, according to the Maryland State Fire Marshal. The fire marshal’s office said the boat did not sustain damage from the fire and that, while the cause remains under investigation, “they cannot rule out a failure to turn on the fuel vapor blower fan or to allow it to properly exhaust after the vessel was refueled.”

Vincent Dortenzo, a spokesperson for the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, said four Elkton residents, a 19-year-old man, 16-year-old boy, 20-year-old woman and 50-year-old man, were injured.

Others hurt included a man and woman from Newark, Delaware, both 31 years old. A 23-year-old person and a 21-year-old man were also wounded. Dortenzo said two employees who were nearby — an 18-year-old man from Warwick and a 20-year-old man from Cecilton — went to the hospital for inhalation.

Photos shared by the fire marshal showed seats inside the boat scattered and ripped apart, though the outside remained intact.

Maryland’s Natural Resources Police and the Office of the State Fire Marshal are investigating.

On Friday, two adults and two children were hospitalized after their boat caught fire in the Patapsco River.
