A man, who police have not identified, was fatally shot early Sunday morning during an encounter with Baltimore police officers following a 20-minute car chase through the city.
Baltimore Police Chief Richard Worley said the incident began around 1:25 a.m. when the department’s Foxtrot chopper called out a car wanted in connection to an alleged armed carjacking in Baltimore County.
Officers on the ground found the car and began following it as the helicopter whirled overhead. Police cars zigged and zagged in a high-speed chase between districts for some 20 minutes before the driver of the stolen car pulled over on the 3300 block of Clifton Avenue in the Walbrook neighborhood around 1:41 a.m., Worley said.
Officers blocked him in with their vehicles. The driver then tried to exit the car, only to see police and quickly returned to the vehicle, Worley said. According to police, officers approached and attempted to get the man out of the car, but he refused, locking himself inside.
It’s unclear how many officers were present at the stop, but as one prepared to break the car window, Worley said an officer saw a gun and shouted it out. Within seconds, bullets flew. Multiple officers shot at the car, wounding and killing the man. It is unclear how many shots were fired.
What happened between the officer calling out the gun and police firing off multiple rounds also remains unclear. Officers recovered the weapon spotted in the suspect’s car immediately after the shooting. Worley said it was a BB gun.
“Looks just like a real gun, and the officer has no way of knowing,” Worley said Sunday morning.
No officers were hurt and those involved have since been put on administrative leave, according to Worley. They will remain on leave until the attorney general makes a decision in the case, which could take anywhere from two to six months.
The Maryland Attorney General’s Independent Investigation Division is investigating the shooting.
