The 22-year-old man who was shot and killed while driving near a traffic circle on York Road was a student at Towson University, the school’s president said in a statement Saturday.
The student, Nasir Majied, was shot by a person driving northbound in another vehicle on Friday around 3:20 p.m. The Baltimore County Police Department said the suspect fired multiple rounds then continued to drive. Majied was taken to a hospital, where he died.
Investigators are searching for the suspect. It was not immediately clear if the shooting was motivated by road rage or targeted.
Towson University President Mark Ginsberg said in a letter that the student “tragically lost his life in an off-campus shooting.” He added that the university is working with police in the investigation.
“This is a devastating loss, and I join with Nasir’s family, loved ones and all members of the TU community who mourn his passing,” Ginsberg said. “I ask all Tigers—students, faculty, staff, neighbors and alumni—to keep Nasir’s family and friends in their thoughts."
Ginsberg said he understands the fears this incident may cause and the university is working with Baltimore County to keep the campus community safe.
Police have not shared details about the suspect but said in a news release Friday that detectives are “reviewing evidence and pursuing leads as they work to identify and locate the suspect.”
The busy traffic circle where the shooting took place is filled with restaurants and retailers in downtown Towson. There was an increased police presence in the area following the shooting, said Joy Lepola-Stewart, a spokesperson with the Baltimore County Police Department.
Lepola-Stewart said the victim was driving a Kia and the car came to a rest after the shooting. She said police believe there was only one person in the other vehicle.
