Police search for shooter after man is fatally shot while driving in Towson

Baltimore County Police were searching Friday night for whoever opened fire on a motorist near a busy Towson circle in broad daylight, killing him. The shooting could have been a road-rage incident, authorities said.

Authorities said 22-year-old Nasir Majied was traveling northbound on York Road just before Towson Circle around 3:20 p.m. when a suspect in another vehicle, also traveling northbound, fired multiple shots and then drove off.

Officers arrived on the scene within two minutes and began to render aid, then transported Majied to an area hospital, where he was later pronounced dead, police said in a news release,

They did not provide details about the suspect’s vehicle or any relationship they may have had with the victim.

The shooting took place in a busy retail district lined with businesses and restaurants, including a Shake Shack, and shortly before a monthly Friday night festival was to begin.

Many community members learned of the shooting when they received a public safety message that read, “Shooting Just Occurred at York Road Northbound at the Circle Avoid the area. Police activity Updates to follow.”

The Maryland State Highway Administration notified residents of police activity and road and lane closures near the circle and advised them to look for alternate routes.

Towson University officials referred questions to county police.

Late Friday afternoon, yellow tape looped around Towson Circle as buses backed up on East Joppa Road. Outside Playa Bowls, the driver’s side door of a silver Kia Forte with New Jersey license plates had at least a half-dozen bullet holes. Steps away, small-business owners lined Pennsylvania Avenue with their tents and products, some unaware of what had unfolded.

Andrea Dixon, the owner of The Crafty Therapist Corner, said 100 to 200 people typically visit her tent at “Feet on the Street,” the pop-up festival and concert along Pennsylvania Avenue put on by the Towson Chamber of Commerce.

She said she was hopeful, but not so sure, many would turn out after Friday’s shooting.

“When we found out what happened, it was a little concerning,” Dixon said. ”You’re just like, ‘What’s happening, and will it spill over?’”

Officials said there would be an increased police presence at events in the wake of the shooting.

“This is an extremely unfortunate incident, but I’ll tell you we are an extremely resilient community,” said Nancy Hafford, director of the Towson chamber.

Separate shooting on York Road

Earlier Friday, Baltimore City Police responded to a shooting at about 2:37 p.m. in the 4500 block of York Road.

In that incident, officers found a 39-year-old man suffering from a gunshot wound, city police said in a news release. He was transported to a hospital and listed in critical but stable condition.
