Woman dies after police shooting during welfare check in Middle River

A Baltimore County Police officer fired his weapon during a welfare check on an armed woman Thursday morning in Middle River, officials said.

Officers responded around 6 a.m. to the 1000 block of Carroll Island Road to check on an armed person wanted in connection with an assault. The woman, who was in a vehicle and not identified by police, relinquished a knife to officers before producing a firearm, police said. An officer fired their gun in response.

Authorities said she was taken to a nearby hospital in critical condition. The Independent Investigations Division of the Maryland attorney general’s office confirmed Tuesday that the woman had died.

The agency is investigating the police shooting.

It’s unclear how the woman was injured. Officers recovered a gun from the vehicle.

The officer who fired the gun was put on administrative leave.
