The Maryland attorney general’s office is investigating the circumstances of an in-custody death along the Baltimore-Washington Parkway involving the U.S. Park Police and the Greenbelt Police Department.
The death occurred around 10 p.m. Wednesday in Greenbelt, according to a statement issued by the attorney general’s office, which investigates all police custody deaths in Maryland.
The Park Police observed a vehicle leaving the Baltimore-Washington Parkway and crashing into a wooded area along Southway, a four-lane road that connects to the parkway, the attorney general’s office said in a statement released Thursday. The federal officers requested emergency responders and called the Greenbelt Police, the statement said.
When the Greenbelt officers arrived, the Park Police had placed the driver of the vehicle in handcuffs and “escorted him out of the wooded area and to the roadway,” the statement said. “While in custody, the driver became unresponsive.”
The attorney general’s office has not released the names of the decedent or any of the officers. A Park Police spokesperson declined to comment on the active investigation.
An infant was in the driver’s vehicle but was not injured, according to the attorney general’s office.
