The FBI on Tuesday increased to $1 million the reward for information leading to the capture of a man suspected of killing his wife in 2015 at an Anne Arundel County doughnut shop, and who the federal agency counts as one of its “Ten Most Wanted Fugitives.”
Federal investigators and the Anne Arundel County Police believe Bhadreshkumar Patel fatally stabbed his wife, 21-year-old Palak Patel, while they were working a night shift at the Dunkin’ Donuts in Hanover almost 11 years ago.
Authorities said the couple were embroiled in an argument about whether to return to their native India, as she wanted, or to stay in the United States, as he did. They believe he attacked her with a large kitchen knife on April 12, 2015, after becoming enraged that she had made plans to reunite with her family.
The investigation was never a whodunit, the authorities said, but a question of finding the person they long suspected in the killing.
Police officials said Bhadreshkumar Patel rushed to the couple’s residence after the attack, packed his belongings and took a taxi to Newark, New Jersey. He was seen the next day at the train station there, then disappeared.
Jimmy Paul, special agent in charge of the FBI’s Baltimore Field Office, said in a statement Tuesday that the bureau hopes the increased reward “attracts greater attention to our tireless search for Bhadreshkumar Patel and leads to tips we need to provide justice for Palak Patel, who was brutally murdered by her husband.”
The agency was offering a $250,000 reward on the 10th anniversary of the killing.
Anne Arundel Police described “unwavering commitment” to finding their suspect in a social media post. The agency asked anyone with information about Bhadreshkumar Patel’s whereabouts to call county homicide detectives at 410-222-4731.
Anyone who wants to leave information anonymously can call Anne Arundel’s tip line at 410-222-4700 or contact the FBI at 1-800-CALL-FBI.
