Two men were pulled from Baltimore waters in unrelated incidents Sunday afternoon, including a 37-year-old man who died after being rescued from the Patapsco River in Harbor East.
Police first received a call minutes before 1 p.m. for a stolen motorcycle in the 2800 block of Boston Street in Canton. Officers arrived to learn two men, ages 33 and 48, had been fighting over the stolen bike.
Police said the 48-year-old cut the other man on the arm with a pocketknife before leaping into the water and swimming underneath a bridge. Officers called in help from fire water rescue units, who pulled the man from the water.
The 48-year-old was taken into custody and transported to a central booking facility, where he was charged with auto theft.
Shortly thereafter, authorities said, they responded to a call for a reported drowning in the Patapsco River in Harbor East.
Khalilah Yancey, a spokesperson for the Baltimore City Fire Department, said crews responded to the 1300 block of Lancaster Street after 3 p.m. for two people in the water.
One person got out without assistance while the other had to be pulled out by divers, she said. Medical personnel provided care to the 37-year-old man rescued and transported him to a hospital, where he died, Baltimore Police said.
Preliminary investigation revealed the victim was involved in a physical altercation with another male before he went into the water.
Homicide detectives are investigating.
Michael Brennan was going to shop at Whole Foods when he saw the commotion. He said he saw a man pulled out of the water.
Passersby were kept away from the area. Several blocks between Living Classrooms and Keystone Corner were cordoned off from the public.
