A man accused of shooting a Baltimore County Police officer in the parking lot of a precinct is expected to plead guilty and will be committed to a psychiatric hospital after a doctor determined that he was not criminally responsible.

Assistant State’s Attorney Lauren Stone told Baltimore County Circuit Judge Dennis M. Robinson Jr. on Friday that both sides agreed with the finding in the case of Andrew Britt and will schedule another court date.

Britt’s attorney, Tony Garcia, has said his client experienced a mental breakdown that day and tried to die by suicide.

At the time, Britt was working at Liberty Elementary School in Central Forest Park in West Baltimore as a teacher. He’s charged with three counts of attempted first-degree murder and related offenses.

Here’s what police allege happened:

On March 13, 2025, Britt entered the Wilkens Precinct and struck up a conversation with an officer who was behind a desk.

After a few minutes, Britt left the building, walked into the parking lot and approached a different officer who was filling up a patrol vehicle with gas.

Later, Britt went up to that officer again, pulled a gun from his waistband and opened fire.

Britt then shot Officer Jordan Riddick. Police returned fire and Britt collapsed from his own gunshot wounds. Medics took the pair to the Maryland Shock Trauma Center, and both of them survived.

Earlier this year, Baltimore County broke ground on a $32 million project to replace the existing Wilkens Precinct. Construction on the two-story, 34,000-square-foot building is scheduled to be completed in 2028.

In an email, Detective Trae Corbin, a police spokesperson, said the department does not comment on pending cases.

The president of the Baltimore County Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 4, Doug Jess, could not immediately be reached for comment.

Britt, 28, of Windsor Hills, is being held in the Baltimore County Detention Center without bail.
