A strong nor’easter is developing off the East Coast. While forecasts suggest that the worst of the storm could miss Maryland, the National Weather Service said that a lot about the storm’s path and strength remains uncertain.

The low-pressure system is expected to stay off the coast of the Carolinas in the next few days, said Katherine Humphrey, a meteorologist for the weather service’s Baltimore/Washington office. The Baltimore region likely won’t see a lot of rain, but there’s potential for coastal flooding along the Chesapeake Bay, Humphrey said.

As of Thursday morning, there’s still some uncertainty about weather over the weekend. The latest forecast for the storm’s track is closer to New Jersey/Delmarva. Central Maryland will likely stay dry with breezy and warmer conditions, according to the weather service. If the nor’easter travels closer, there’s some potential for rain east of I-95.

The rough weather led to the cancellation of the first day of the Oceans Calling music festival in Ocean City. A coastal flood warning is in effect in Ocean City until 4 p.m. on Friday.

Nor’easters are strong storms that develop off the coast between Georgia and New England. They are usually more common from mid-fall to mid-spring and can produce major snowstorms during the winter. The storm is expected to be pushed offshore early next week as high pressure builds from the Great Lake region, bringing warmer temperatures to Maryland.
