[Read the latest: 3 to 8 inches of snow expected Sunday in Baltimore region]
Marylanders should ready themselves for several inches of snow to potentially accumulate as a storm nears the East Coast this weekend.
While predictions for the weekend vary, the Baltimore area could see anywhere from 4 inches to over a foot of snow depending on temperatures, according to Kyle Pallozzi, a meteorologist for the Baltimore/Washington office of the National Weather Service. It’s still not clear how much is expected to accumulate, he added.
“One degree difference in temperature could be the difference between the snow sticking and not sticking,” he said. “There is a lot of uncertainty surrounding the forecast.”
Snowfall could begin late Saturday or early Sunday morning, but it is most likely to start accumulating on Sunday afternoon through Monday morning. The intensity of the storm is unlikely to match January’s winter storm, which covered the region with heavy snow and ice for weeks.
Officials are on edge as potential snow approaches. A winter storm watch was issued on Friday for Baltimore, Frederick, Carroll and Cecil counties until 10 a.m. on Monday, according to the Maryland Department of Emergency Management.

Pallozzi said there could be a high temperature of 40 and a low of 32 on Sunday, but like the snowfall, forecasts may change. The further north of the city, the colder it is expected to be. Precipitation will likely start on Sunday as wet snow or rain and transition into snowfall, he said.
Flakes will partially melt as they fall, meaning it’ll be more moist than the snow brought by last month’s winter storm. Think of snow that’s good for packing into snowballs, rather than hardened ice.
Ahead of the storm, the Baltimore City Sheriff’s Office issued a winter shelter declaration starting on Sunday at 4 p.m. until Monday at 9 a.m. A list of warming centers and overnight emergency shelters can be found on the city’s website.
Before the storm makes its way from the Gulf Coast to Maryland, the weekend will feel like the beginning of spring.
A high of 51 is expected on Saturday as the sun shines through clouds, according to the weather service. Mid-to-late next week, temperatures are expected to bounce back up to the high 40s and lows 50s.
