After a night of powerful thunderstorms that knocked out power and snarled air travel across the region, Maryland isn’t done with unsettled weather. Another round of showers and thunderstorms could develop Wednesday afternoon and evening, though forecasters say today’s storms are expected to be less severe.
The National Weather Service issued a marginal outlook for severe weather in Central Maryland, after the region has already been battered with multiple rounds of thunderstorms this week.
The front moving southeast into Central Maryland will likely not be as severe as Tuesday’s storms, said Samantha Timmers, a meteorologist for the weather service’s Baltimore/Washington office.
“We are in the thick of these summertime afternoon thunderstorms,” Timmers said. She recommended that people stay aware about the weather and have multiple ways to get a warning and stay safe.
Thunderstorms on Tuesday left thousands of area residents without power and stranded travelers at airports.
Nearly 150 flights at Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport were canceled, according to the flight tracking system, FlightAware. More than 500 more were canceled at the Washington, D.C.-area airports.
As of 8 a.m. Wednesday, more than 50 flights at Dulles International and Reagan National airports and seven flights at BWI Airport were canceled.
