Exactly eight months after tearing his ACL, Ravens inside linebacker Teddye Buchanan was activated off the physically-unable-to-perform list Friday.
Buchanan was initially expected to be cleared for the start of training camp, according to coach Jesse Minter, but his successful physical gives him about a month to be ready for the Ravens’ Sept. 13 season opener.
In 14 games as a rookie last year, Buchanan finished third on the Ravens in tackles (93) and tied for fourth in tackles for loss (five). Roquan Smith is entrenched as the Ravens’ middle linebacker, but Trenton Simpson has impressed in camp and could battle Buchanan for snaps as the weak-side starter.
Ravens officials have raved about Buchanan’s work ethic during his rehabilitation. The fourth-round pick tore his ACL Dec. 14, in a Week 15 win over the Cincinnati Bengals.
“This dude has been incredible in how he’s attacked coming off the injury that he’s come off of,” Minter said Tuesday. “And, again, it’s our job to make sure that when we put him into the football environment that he’s ready and he doesn’t have any setbacks off of that.”
Buchanan, who earned Pro Football Writers of America All-Rookie Team honors, will likely be held out of the Ravens’ remaining joint practices and preseason games. With his activation, the Ravens have no players remaining on the PUP list. Had Buchanan not been activated this preseason, he would have missed at least the team’s first four games.
Note
Ravens offensive tackle Kendall Lamm was added to the reserve/retired list Friday, less than two weeks after joining the team as a potential swing tackle. Lamm, 34, arrived in Baltimore as a replacement for veteran offensive tackle Hakeem Adeniji, who also retired.
