TORONTO — Amid one of the Orioles’ best offensive innings this season, a piece of unpleasant news came. While Baltimore scored five runs in the sixth inning against the Blue Jays, designated hitter Samuel Basallo didn’t play a part.
Basallo departed the game with right abdominal discomfort, Baltimore announced. The Orioles pinch hit Jeremiah Jackson for Basallo, and Jackson contributed right away with an RBI single.
It remains to be seen how severe, if at all, Basallo’s discomfort is. Basallo has dealt with a few minor maladies this year, including knee discomfort after a collision at the plate.
He hasn’t required an injured list placement in his short major league career, although he dealt with a right elbow stress fracture in the minors in 2024 that kept him out for several months.
Basallo is one of Baltimore’s most dangerous hitters. He entered Friday’s series opener in Toronto with a .276 average and .842 on-base-plus-slugging percentage. His numbers since May began are even better: a .318 average with a .924 OPS.
The Orioles have had 19 players hit the injured list this season.
