A man died early Sunday after he struck a parked Howard County Police car in Jessup, fled the scene and crashed into a retaining wall during a pursuit, authorities said.

The driver of a 2018 Infiniti Q60 struck the occupied police vehicle in a parking lot around 2 a.m. in the 7100 block of Montevideo Road, officials said.

The driver fled the scene, leading police on a pursuit before crashing into a retaining wall about a mile away.

The Maryland attorney general’s office on Wednesday identified the driver as 20-year-old Anthony Bowers, Jr. of Baltimore. The officer is PFC Amir Parker, a six-year veteran who is assigned to the traffic management division.

Two other people were taken to the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center, where they were in stable condition, according to authorities. It’s unclear how many officers were in the vehicle or involved in the chase.

The officer who radioed in the incident said it was a “departmental hit-and-run” at Royal Farms and that he pursued the car as it fled east on Montevideo Road, according to the audio. A few minutes later, another radio call was made requesting medics for three people “ejected” from the car.

Workers at Royal Farms declined to comment on the incident.

A stretch of Montevideo Road at the line of Howard and Anne Arundel counties was closed to traffic most of the morning and reopened around 9 a.m.

The road is a quiet residential street lined with single-family homes and small businesses. Hours after the police pursuit and fatal crash, the area was calm as passersby carried on with Labor Day weekend activities.

A man who lives in the neighborhood and was riding bikes with his son Sunday said he had no idea what had happened that morning.

The fatal crash is being reviewed by the Maryland Attorney General’s Independent Investigations Division, which handles all cases of police-involved incidents in Maryland that end in a person’s death.
