KANSAS CITY — Orioles infielder Jackson Holliday, rehabbing with Triple-A Norfolk, is returning to Baltimore to undergo imaging on his injured right hand.

Holliday’s return from a February surgery on his broken hamate bone has not gone smoothly, and this is another potential setback for the 22-year-old.

Holliday’s first rehab assignment was paused last week. He dealt with mild right wrist soreness, the Orioles said. After a few days of rest, Holliday began a new rehab assignment, first with High-A Frederick before moving to Norfolk on Tuesday.

But after striking out on a foul tip in his first at-bat Tuesday, Holliday appeared to be in pain. He shook his right hand as he walked off the field and he didn’t come out on defense. The Orioles announced Holliday’s exit as being due to right hand discomfort.

After Baltimore’s 6-5 loss to the Royals, manager Craig Albernaz said Holliday would undergo an MRI as a precaution.

“We want to see what we’re working with, if there’s anything there at all, and kind of reassess from there,” Albernaz said.
