The Orioles may not see first baseman Ryan Mountcastle return this season, after all.

Mountcastle, who was close to completing a lengthy rehab process from a broken bone in his foot, will be out for another few months due to a “pretty significant” oblique strain, president of baseball operations Mike Elias said Friday.

Although Elias said “hopefully” the Orioles will see Mountcastle return this season, the calendar is an issue. It’s the last day of July. The regular season ends Sept. 27. The math is tight for Mountcastle to return, given his need to first recover and then build back into baseball form.

Elias offered other injury updates, and he touched on the Orioles’ buy-and-sell approach to the trade deadline, which arrives Monday at 6 p.m.

Right-hander Colin Selby will miss the rest of this season and some of 2027 after he underwent shoulder surgery to repair his labrum and rotator cuff Tuesday. Selby hasn’t pitched all season. He sustained his injury shortly before spring training.

And, although the Orioles traded for Jake Rogers on Thursday, the move was not made due to injury setbacks for catchers Adley Rutschman and Samuel Basallo. Elias said both are progressing as hoped.

Rutschman, who is also at the center of some trade speculation, is on the injured list due to an inflamed tendon in his left wrist. That tendon is no longer inflamed, Elias said, and Rutschman has begun playing catch again. He will begin batting Saturday and could be ready for rehab games next week.

Basallo, who received an injection in his inflamed shoulder, is beginning to throw. He will hit soon, as well.

“Both of those guys are moving along quite well, and we’re hoping to have them back soon,” Elias said. “I think every game is important to us, and we saw Jake Rogers available on the market after the DFA from Detroit. Veteran catcher. Really well known for running a pitching staff, and we thought he’d be an upgrade in the short term, so we brought him in.

“He’s going to be catching a lot here in the next few days to help hold down the fort until one or both of those guys are back. And, even when they are back, we’ve run a three-catcher roster quite a bit here. We also don’t know what the trade deadline is going to bring, in terms of what the roster is going to look like. It just made sense to us to pick Jake up, but actually we’re quite hopeful that Adley and Sam are back soon.”

In less-immediate news, right-hander Ryan Helsley began throwing Friday. He has been shut down for a month as he recovers from elbow inflammation. The closing pitcher is still on track to return before the end of the season.

And right-hander Félix Bautista, who underwent shoulder surgery last year, is in the mix for a return ahead of the end of this season.
