BOSTON — Adley Rutschman has landed on the injured list for the third time this season. This time, the Orioles catcher has inflammation on his left wrist.

Baltimore announced Rutschman’s addition to the 10-day injured list Monday, a few hours before the club begins a critical series against the red-hot Red Sox. Combined the Orioles and Red Sox have a 20-game winning streak, with 13 straight from Boston.

Rutschman, who was Baltimore’s lone All-Star this year, has also been on the injured list for ankle inflammation and a concussion. He also dealt with separate oblique strains that resulted in two lengthy injured list stints last year.

“Left wrist, it has been bothering [him], dealing with it, and we’re at the point where we, you know, get ahead of it, IL him,” manager Craig Albernaz said. “Do the best course of action to kind of get him back at full ability. Anybody who has played the catcher position before, the left wrist takes a beating. That’s your glove hand.”

The Orioles selected the contract of Chadwick Tromp, giving them three catchers still. Baltimore has 12 pitchers, one fewer than the maximum allowed, because the team optioned right-hander Cam Sanders ahead of the series finale in Houston on Sunday. That move was necessary to bring in catcher Sam Huff.

Huff starts Monday’s opener at Fenway Park. Catcher Samuel Basallo left Sunday’s game with right shoulder discomfort, so his status remains to be seen.

Albernaz called Basallo’s shoulder issue a “day-to-day thing” while adding that the 21-year-old feels a bit better Monday and he will continue to undergo treatment.

Baltimore also has left-hander Josh Walker on the taxi squad, as well as outfielder Johnathan Rodríguez. Two sources said infielder Luis Vázquez is also on his way to Boston to join the Orioles’ taxi squad.

For the most part, Rutschman has looked like his old self this season. His defensive metrics are well above league average and he rebounded from his worst offensive season to produce a .251 average and .764 on-base-plus-slugging percentage. That helped him reach his third career All-Star Game.
